panthers 150x150 Buffalo Bills Versus Carolina Panthers Preview Who Becomes a Contender? It seems almost premature to consider either Buffalo or Carolina as an contender, yet this Sunday’s matchup has the feel of a season changing game. Both Buffalo and Carolina are fighting to get on the plus side of .500. Buffalo began the season 1-4 before finally winning a big game against the New York Jets last week. Carolina started the season 0-3 but has now won two straight games while suddenly finding their running game. This match up will go a long ways towards determining which direction these teams will go in 2009.

The Buffalo Bills certainly have their work cut out for them as they will be playing without their starting , Trent Edwards. Edwards was knocked out of the New York Jets game early and suffered a severe concussion. Replacing him will be Ryan Fitzpatrick. Fitzpatrick is known for being a ball control without much ball control.

While the Buffalo Bills certainly have a decent running attack with Fred Jackson and Marshawn Lynch, they really need to find a way to get the ball to their superstar receivers. Both Terrell Owens and Lee Evans have been thrust into the decoy role and have become virtual non-factors in most of Buffalo’s games. The Panthers secondary can certainly be exploited if Fitzpatrick can get the ball out quickly. That may be easier said than done with the Panthers defense suddenly waking up the last few weeks. Julius Peppers has been an absolute terror the last two weeks with four sacks, and the entire defense has been producing turnovers.

Likewise, the Buffalo Bills defense has shown a nose for the ball as well. The Bills secondary picked off six passes against the New York Jets. Given that the Panthers Jake Delhomme tends to throw the ball to the other , this could be an area where the Bills can have an impact.

While Jake may have a problem passing the , the Panthers are not likely to throw it very often. With DeAngelo Williams and Jonathan Stewart running the , head coach John Fox would be a moron to throw the ball except when absolutely necessary. If the Panthers stick to the game plan for controlling the clock with a powerful running game, the Bills likely will have no chance. Look for Williams and Stewart to completely dominate the game from start to finish. The Panthers will control the clock and win going away.

pddolphincheer 243x300 AFC East NFL Picks and Predictions For 2009The AFC East in recent years has been pretty much all about the Patriots for the last several seasons with the lone exception of last year.  In a very odd 2008 season, the mighty Patriots lost superstar Tom Brady and dropped to second place behind Miami via a tie breaker.  This season, Brady is back but does that mean that the AFC East is a gimme once again?  Let’s look into the crystal ball for 2009, and see what stares back at us.

New England Patriots

While the Patriots are not the powerhouse they have been in previous seasons, they are still awfully good.  This version of the Patriots has just as strong of a chance in winning the division as any, and I expect that Brady will return to form quickly and decidedly.  Randy Moss, Brady, newcomer Fred Taylor, and many others will keep the Patriots near the top of the standings all season long.  I expect them to reclaim the AFC East crown.

Miami Dolphins

The Dolphins sprung from nowhere to take the playoff spot in the AFC East last season and they will not sneak up on anyone this year.  The Dolphins are a solid but they do have some question marks.  Will Ronnie Brown be able to hold up this season?  Will the wildcat be effective again?  Can the Tuna work some more magic?  I see second place in this talented division.

pdpatriots 300x214 AFC East NFL Picks and Predictions For 2009Buffalo Bills

The Bills are one of those teams that is really hard to figure out.  They have some serious talent and that new guy…. Terrell Owens.  They have a that might just explode now that the Bills have more than just Lee Evans to throw to.  It should be fun to watch.  The Bills will come in a strong third, and would not surprise me at all to go higher.

New York Jets

The Jets will struggle this season because they seem committed to rookie Mark Sanchez.  He is a fantastic talent and I do see him succeeding in his rookie year, but there will be growing pains for sure.  Expect that Sanchez will play alot, and the Jets will win a little.  This will be a good thing in the long run for the Jets.

The preseason gets into full swing this week with a full slate of games.  For those of us that have been dying for some action, this week is like a dream come true.  The season got off to a great start in the Hall of Fame kickoff classic with the Titans beating the Bills. (just as I picked)  Here are the rest of the week one preseason games along with who I predict will come away the winner:

THU, AUG 13

New England at Philadelphia

The Patriots and the Eagles are actually two of the favorites according to most experts in the this season.  It will be interesting to see how Tom Brady looks in preseason action, though I am sure he will not play very much.  As for the Eagles, they should keep Mcnabb on the bench as well as Westbrook.  They are simply too fragile.  I expect that the Patriots will win this preseason matchup.

Winner – New England Patriots

Washington at Baltimore

The Redskins are hoping that Portis has at least one more big season, and the Ravens are simply hoping that defense can remain as strong as usual.  The Ravens are not nearly as deep as they once were on defense.  I still expect they will win this preseason match up.

Winner – Baltimore Ravens

Arizona at Pittsburgh

The Cardinals take the field for the first time since the Super Bowl, and they are fired up about it.  Ironically, this Super Bowl rematch is set to be pretty interesting.  Both teams have some second and third string players that are looking to make a splash.  This game will come down to the running game and defense which puts the win firmly with the Steelers.

Winner – Pittsburgh Steelers

Dallas at Oakland

The Cowboys take the field without Terrell Owens and they have to find a way to replace him.  This game will begin to answer the questions that the Cowboys have at wide receiver.  While Oakland is not exactly the greatest secondary ever, they are a solid enough group to get a feel for the Cowboys.  More importantly, the Cowboys second and third string running backs are better than most ’s starters.

Winner – Dallas Cowboys

FRI, AUG 14

St. Louis at NY Jets

The Rams just found out that they are without Donnie Avery for at least four to six weeks, and this injury is going to hurt.  The Rams just do not have the firepower at the position that they have been used to.  The Jets are anxious to unveil new rookie Mark Sanchez.  It will be a big splash for NY.

Winner – New York Jets

Minnesota at Indianapolis

The Vikings and the Colts will be a very fun game to watch simply because of the talent on the second and third teams.  Both teams are pretty darn deep, and so it should be a good preseason game to watch.  This one smells like a Colt win to me, however.

Winner – Indiannapolis Colts

Cincinnati at New Orleans

The Bengals are hoping for a huge return for Carson Palmer, but that likely won’t begin against the Saints in preseason.  Still, there are a lot of answers to be had in this game.  Can Reggie Bush play a whole game without breaking a leg?  Can the Bengals play a whole game with no felonies?  I mean penalties?  We shall see.  Either way, the Saints win this one big in preseason action.

Winner – New Orleans Saints

Denver at San Francisco

The post Cutler era in Denver gets started here and Kyle Orton has to be a bit nervous.  Then again, he was a in Chicago, so he has nothing to be nervous about.  All kidding aside, I think he will do quite well in Denver.  He especially will do well against these 49ers in preseason action.

Winner – Denver Broncos

SAT, AUG 15

Atlanta at Detroit

The Falcons are amped up for an NFC South battle this season and the Lions are simply hoping to win a few games.  While optimism is high in Detroit, the depth of this is still very shallow.  Rome was not built in a day, and neither will Detroit be.

Winner – Atlanta Falcons

Chicago at Buffalo

The Bears are anxious to see what they have with Jay Cutler under center, and the Bills are coming off an opening week loss against the Titans.  While the Bears are not quite as strong as the Titans, they should still handle these Bills.

Winner – Chicago Bears

Cleveland at Green Bay

The Browns have a situation to work out.  The Packers need to get a running back in order quick.  This game will do little to solve either situation, but it will be a good game.  The Browns will surprise an amped up Green Bay squad.

Winner – Cleveland Browns

Tampa Bay at Tennessee

The Bucs, like many other teams, need to find a .  The Titans are pretty set in their lineup, and looked pretty impressive against Buffalo.  I expect that the Titans will take advantage of the Bucs early growing pains.

Winner – Tennessee Titans

Houston at Kansas City

The Texans are going to be fun to watch this season.  Kansas City is a that is very much in turmoil.  Expect the Texans to spring a little preseason surprise on the Chiefs.

Winner – Houston Texans

Seattle at San Diego

The Chargers and the Seahawks will be a great preseason game.  The Seahawks are searching for some semblence of a running game, and the Chargers are just trying to keep LaDanian Tomlinson healthy.  Expect LT to skip this one for sure, and it might be the difference.

Winner – Seattle Seahawks

MON, AUG 17

Jacksonville at Miami

The Jaguars and Miami are always a fun game with the whole intra-state rivalry thing.  This game will be fun to watch as well.  Expect that Miami will have a little more firepower in the backups for this one.

Winner – Miami Dolphins

Carolina at NY Giants

This game will be the ultimate expression of power struggle in the NFC.  The Panthers are just too good at running back, and they should be able to handle the Giants in this one.

Winner – Carolina Panthers

Preseason Record Overall – 1 Win 0 Losses

pdvinceyoung Titans Upend Bills In Hall Of Fame ClassicThe Tennessee Titans used a bit of trickery and a solid effort from the offense and defense in the first half to hold off a second half that was pretty much won by the Bills.  Neither played the starters for very long, and the game was pretty much what we expected it would be.  The Buffalo Bills had only field goals, and was twice stopped at the goal line by the Titans defense in the first half alone.

Terrell Owens debuted as a Buffalo Bill and played only one series.  In that series, he had two catches for 27 yds.  Not a huge deal, but still Buffalo fans got to see their new wide receiver catch a few balls of the first time.

Another interesting storyline was the play of Titans Vince Young.  He started off extremely shaky, but then did recover enough to make a nice pass for a touchdown to Paul Williams.   Starter Kerry Collins was solid in limited action as was Patrick Ramsey.

Buffalo had little to feel good about on offense, with the lone exception of backup Gibron Hamden.  He was extremely good under center completing 11/13 for 89 yds.  Another bright spot was running back Xavier Omon.  He was quite active with 36 yds rushing and 3 catches for 25 yds as well.

Tonight’s opening Hall of Fame game match up features two teams that are due to answer some questions.  At the top of that list of questions is how Terrell Owens will fare in his Bill debut, and how the first Titan defense will fare without Albert Haynesworth.  Both of these questions will not likely be answered in the Hall of Fame Game, but we might get a glimpse.  Owens is slated to play.

Given that the teams will be using very sporadic first players, one must look at the second units when determining the outcome.  For this reason, I would go with the Titans here.  The Titans do still have Vince Young at , and he is still quite talented.  Not only that, he is the number two man on the totem pole now, and he will want to prove himself.  Given this, he will be tough against Buffalo.

Buffalo will be facing an uphill battle with Ryan Fitzpatrick and others at the position the majority of the game.  This is especially true against even the second Titans defense.  They are no slouch to be sure.  It will be fun to watch Terrell even in limited action.

Prediction:

Titans will win.

Season Record: 0-0

pdcowboys 195x300 NFC East Preseason PredictionsThe NFC East has a long and storied history, so it seems appropriate that they be the first division that I predict.   picks and predictions specializes in picking games, but we would be remiss without predicting the ’s season as a whole.  Since this is the case, I will be predicting each of the divisions day by day, and will finish it off with an overall pick for the year’s conferences and playoffs as well.

The NFC East is going to be very interesting this year.  No less than three of the four teams have a legitimate shot at winning the division, and the Redskins could even surprise if the stars align right.  You never know with the NFC East.  Here are the four teams, and the order I think they will finish in during the NFC regular season:

The Dallas Cowboys – Dallas is far from my favorite and they are entering a year that will be interesting to watch.  They have some questions to be answered, such as their secondary and replacing the ever present Terrell Owens.  They also have one of the finest running back tandems in the league.  Tashard Choice, Marion Barber, and Felix Jones is a load for any .  I think Dallas will  put it together this season, and Romo will have his finest season.  Dallas goes as the running game goes, and they can not seem to miss with this group.

The Philadelphia Eagles - The Eagles are the en vogue pick this year in the NFC East, but the truth is they are still a bit unpredictable.  The reason?  Superstar running back Brian Westbrook is breaking down.  He is just too fragile at this point to put them in the upper echelon.  If the Eagles get a ton of production from him, however, this might send the Eagles to the top.

The New York Giants - Plaxico leaving the Giants will hurt much more than Giant’s fans had hoped.  They are without a doubt a talented group, but they will be in trouble in the passing game.  There is always that chance that they bring in someone, or somebody steps up on the roster, but I do not see it happening.

The Washington Redskins – Washington still suffers from the position and Clinton Portis has got to slow down.  Portis amazes every year, and he certainly could do so again this season.  Campbell is just not going to take the Redskins any further than he already has.  He has some great qualities, but the inconsistant nature is killing the Skins.  Defense is suspect in DC this year as well.

In all of my days, I never dreamed there would come a day when I would think that Terrell Owens made any sense.   Just considering that possibility seems foreign to me.  Truthfully, I must say that I agree with alot of what he said about the Michael Vick situation.  It still rings as shallow to me coming from Owens, but it is at least grounded in reality which is a big step for the Buffalo star receiver.

In case you didn’t know, Michael Vick, former star, is recently released from prison and allowed to pursue a return to the NFL.  He had just been in prison as a result of helping to run and fund a dogfighting ring.  He served a prison sentence, and then was on house arrest for a long time.  He also lost his entire fortune made from playing and endorsement deals.

Now, commissioner Roger Goodell is looking like he is going to accept Vick back, but give him a four game suspension to start the season.

To me, that is really kicking a man when he is down.  I understand that Goodell wants to swing a big stick.  I get that.  Really.  I was the first to stand up and say that Vick should be punished.  The bottom line is that Vick was punished. Does it really matter if it was mandated by Goodell or not?  Should societies punishment not be strong enough?

Why does it even matter?  Well, for one thing not many NFL teams are going to want to take on Vick given the situation in the first place.  When you tack on a four game suspension to start the season, then Vick is even less attractive as a worthwhile investment.  He already has a huge challenge in front of him.

I am not a Michael Vick fan.  I am not a Terrell Owens fan.  But I do think that Goodell is being rather idiotic here.  Give the man a chance in full, or give him no chance at all.  If you are going to suspend him, you should just enforce the lifetime ban.  Otherwise, give him a zero tolerance policy, and let the man play .

Every once in a while, some player that nobody expected goes bonkers and has a breakout season.  Sometimes it is an aging star, (see Kurt Warner) and sometimes it is the rookies.  More often than not it is those players that have been in the league a couple of seasons, and gotten their feet wet.  Maybe they are just finally getting their shot.  Whatever the case, Sleepers are tough to guess.

Of course, that won’t stop me from trying….Here are five guys that I think will have better than expected years.

Dwayne Jarrett – This Carolina Panther has had a very uneventful first couple of years in the .   The events he has had unfortunately have been fairly bad.  Still, he is the prototypical wide out in the and he will have a great target opposite him in All World receiver Steve Smith.  Mushin Muhammed will be back as well to continue working with Jarrett. So why Jarrett?  Quite simply put, he made some huge catches in huge situations last season for the Panthers.  Delhomme is freshly signed, and he plays better when under contract.  And finally, Moose has great things to say about him.  Another key is the Panther running game is a beast so Jarrett should get a lot of balls slung to him in open spaces.  With his size, he could make some inroads.
Felix Jones -  Felix is kind of a given, and some might not call him a sleeper.  The reason I do is because he is sharing the backfield with two other guys that would likely start in other backfields.  Felix will be the man in Dallas this year, however.  He is going to be a huge star, and I am far from a Cowboy fan.  The kid is legit.  Watch the tapes.

Brady Quinn

Brady Quinn

Brady Quinn – Though Quinn has not got the starting job wrapped up by any means, he certainly is in control of his own destiny.  The kid is talented, and he has been brought along slowly.  That will not mean tons of Cleveland wins this season, but it will be enough to allow him to take possession of this .  With his intangibles, the Browns star will be better than advertised.  That is saying alot considering he is heavily hyped.

Roy Williams – Sleeper?  After the dud he layed in Big D last season he most certainly is.  The guy is simply a huge talent that never quite fit in.  When you put that much talent in a wide out slot at number one, and then add a NFL that is no longer distracted by Jessica Simpson like Romo, good things have to start happening.  Roy will fill in nicely for Terrell Owens.

Phillip Rivers – Again, he is no typical sleeper.  The difference is that this year he has a healthy Gates to throw to.  This year, Rivers will step into the ranks of the mighty among the quarterbacks.  He is already well respected and a proven winner, but his talent will get the respect it deserves this year.  He just might secure a Super Bowl.

When everybody’s fantasy draft rolls around, it is not likely that tight ends will be at the top of everyone’s draft list.  That is logical considering even the best tight ends do not even come close to contributing what a or running back will provide.  Still, the 2009 season will have some tight ends that will challenge the wide receivers of the league.

This season, there will be at least five of them that you can expect to fill your fantasy scorecard week after week.  Here they are:

Jason Witten – Witten already was putting up pinball type numbers for the Dallas Cowboys before Terrell Owens left, and now he is going to be targeted even more.  Add to that the fact that the Cowboys have a super running attack and you start to see how Witten is set for a career year.

Dallas Clark -  Clark is another example of addition by subtraction.  Harrison is no longer there for Manning to throw to, and Clark should pay the dividends.  Reggie Wayne will still be the man, but Clark will likely be the primary number two in crunch time.

Antonio Gates - Gates is an unquestioned beast when he is healthy and it appears that he is finally there.  Offseason foot surgery solved a long standing problem and that probably means bad news for the rest of the AFC.  Phillip Rivers will be throwing to him early and often.

Kellen Winslow -  Winslow is set to finally fulfill the potential that he has been missing out on for years.  He should be near the top of your tight end list if for no other reason than he is sure to be a security for…..whoever is Tampa Bay’s .

Tony Gonzalez – Matching Gonzalez with Matt Ryan is a match made in heaven.  Not only will Gonzalez give Mattie Ice a new target, but he is the perfect compliment to the Atlanta offense.  They will feed Michael Turner, and then play action pass all day long.  Hello Tony Gonzalez!

Jul 042009

Tony Romo is about to experience life without Terrell.  The former Dallas Cowboy All Pro is gone, and Romo may not yet realize just how good he was.  Make no mistake, Owens was a major distraction.  He will likely be addition by subtraction overall.  Still, the Cowboys have to replace double digit touchdowns somewhere, and Jason Witten can not do it by himself.

Who are the potential replacements?  Dallas did sign a great wide out in Roy Williams, but he disappointed a bit in his brief stint with the Cowboys.  Williams has not shown he can be the main man in the offense, but that could change with Owens gone.  Williams is a special talent.

Patrick Crayton is a great receiver in situations, but he is no number one man.  He makes the perfect second or third receiver, and will be effective in any role he is asked to fill.

The real wild card for the Cowboys receiving corp is going to be Miles Austin.  This guy can burn and will likely be asked to pick up a ton of slack.  Is he ready for that?  Maybe, and maybe not.  We will have to wait and see.  The guy has only 18 catches ….  ever.

Witten will be as reliable as ever, and will pick up some slack.  The problem with Witten is that Owens actually opened the lanes for him.  Nobody really knows that better than Witten, and he is likely going to miss Owens secretly if not openly.

The answer to whether the Cowboys can survive the after-Owens effect is still yet to be answered.  Knowing Jerry Jones, he just might swing a signing before all is said and done.
